    that "politics" post
    x-posted on FB.

    Scattered thoughts on Election 2008:

I think both parties suck at one or more
important issues that impact a few
too many souls for such great sinners are
we all or were the banners in your eyes
just now and for the last few years to see
how cold and numb the hotheads are this time?

Their subtle rhetoric can be so clear
to speak to my own needs and wants and fears
that I forget the aim is not the heart
that helps an Other but the beast that seeks
and feeds and steers the Self away from those
who need a voice to speak for them when they
are foreign born and come to foreign land
or working poor so rich in needs and health
or unborn babe so undesired: the cast
keeps growing on and on and on and on
that really who can keep a play bill when
the least of us could just as easily
be she or he who dances on that stage?

Oh that "my friends" would care about those needs
unfilled by hands invisible that should
be lifting up the ones crushed 'neath the mill
of working for a profit not their own.

Oh that the "hope for change" would be the sort
in which I find belief and not believe
instead that twisted freedoms would become
the more entrenched and taken to new heights.

Oh that they both would not rouse up and show
their Hawkish sides and claim the larger count
of death and bombs and guns and knives and death
and aim their words to give my Self some Peace.

And so I vote this year with heavy heart
and see in these the campaigns' views so shrewd
and well researched by phone calls and the polls
that what my neighbors seek and see and want
make them the sort I hardly call "my friends"
and "hope for change" in this, our Land of hearts
both beating and stilled, our Land of minds both quick
and dull with words of Selfishness that hold
more sway than gross Humanity upon the stage.

    Closing up shop
I think I will be closing down this LJ and moving over to Facebook.

I haven't really had time to put into serious writing of any sort other than what I write for work (trust me, you'd rather not read that unless you're in my field).

Also, this might be my head-wound talking. I tried to bite my experiment, but it jumped and I ended up hitting it with my forehead instead. Now I have 5 stitches in a soon-to-be-scar above my left eye.

    Absolutely. Brilliant.

Anyways, feel free to try and talk me out of moving, I haven't made up my mind yet, but I don't know that I can responsibly keep both and maintain the constant log-in monitoring that such social networks imply.

A picture I took at Allerton looks nice so I've adjusted it's size to be background friendly. If anyone wants it, I have linked them here:

    I killed Mothra
or, at least, Mothra's spawn. There was a wasp or some sort of yellow and black striped insect that was literally the size of my thumb in the lab today. I have big hands, to boot. Literally, my thumb.

This is an image from the "side experiment"/"insanity in the lab" that I've alluded to in various places. Basically, I had a small army of undergrads assemble a small experiment which pulses something like 1MW of power into a volume of gas about 4.5" in diameter. It emits visible light like mad as you can see in this image. Actually, the light is bright white/blue but we have a special filter in place that blocks blue light and it's STILL too bright for the camera I was using.

    Update
I have been feeling very good of late. I'm really busy through the day at work as evidenced by this: (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/mjaworsk/shared/Fusion-docs/slide/eBeamDrawings_v1.1.pdf), but it's been satisfying when I get back home to wife and son.

I seem to have accumulated quite an army at the lab: I have four undergrads at my disposal and an extra high school kid. I have them working on a new machine for side experiments. It is a lot of work to do in just a month or two, but things are working out, it seems.

Last week we were in Albuquerque for a conference trip and right before we were at Princeton for some other work related things. We took some time to search for housing there and found some prospects and I hope to follow up with landlords soon. We also saw my brother while out there. It was nice and all our kids had lots of fun. Eight days of travel is too much, I think (Johanna knows it is).

Iambic writing still goes on as you can plainly see... but maybe it's much subtler now. :)

    An Email Exchange
    Me:
We're thinking that we'll be by a bit afternoon tomorrow. We wanted to give Cyril a chance to have a nap in the morning, though he may need one in the afternoon as well...

    My Brother:
sure, cyril can sleep in our room, or one of the kid's rooms; although it's certainly not as quiet as an isolated hotel room...

    My Brother:
one more thing: you wrote, "We're thinking that we'll be by a bit afternoon tomorrow." that wasn't clear to me...

    Me:
Ah, the space bar was not as responsive as I'd like it to be:
"...we'll be by a bit after _ noon tomorrow."
Though, it does depend on when Cyril wakes up.

You know, saying it out loud doesn't really roll of the tongue in a pleasant way...
Here's something better in iambic pentameter:

We should arrive tomorrow after noon; exactly when depends on Cyril's nap.

Lucky for me: it's not a sonnet or some-such so I don't have to give it to you in rhyme.
    -Mike

    My Brother:
dactylic hexameter is better (more epic!): "next time you should just write: 1-2-0-0-P-M."

    Sonnet for a Mother
A day in mid-late April when we left,
on errand long withheld and long desir'd.
That you should not for long remain bereft,
of baby's face of which you'll never tire.

That day is etched upon the cranial folds
within my head, and surely with your own.
A clear, spring day with sun that shone so bold,
a gentle breeze, the budding trees, had blown.

The calm outside belied the acts inside,
and frantic was the pace of things within.
Contract'ons seemed so close, too close, aside -
endured with efforts of a heroine!

But ending this one day like any other,
A babe did scream to some day call thee Mother.

    A game
    1. Observe the Google ad-bar
    2. Employ Hermeneutics of "Secret-Google-Message"

    e.g. 1. This ad-bar: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/mjaworsk/shared/Pictures/smallGoogleAds.png
    2. Barack Obama is really a Decepticon. He's working with the IRA to develop exploding trees and will destroy the DNC!

On someone's wall but fills me with some pride
I did decide, as on a whim, to make
a rash of friend requests, and so delay
the work I must complete to earn my take
    Procrastinating further in my way.

    Blocked Writing
It seems creative juices are not here,
for I have found some ways to keep from work.
I blame the stringent format to be met,
by all submitters at the meeting near,
but lacking LaTeX class file I am stop'd!
I must admit that O-O Writer makes
a good replacement to the M-S Word.
Yet still I feel as though a classless slob!

Perhaps I need to make this outline in
The five-fold iambs that I use right now.
It seems I'm faster here than on the job:
    Procrastinat'on must, indeed, march on!

    Lest I prove it
With this new mode of ent'ring thoughts and posts,
I find relief from hasty words and speech.
That were it not the case that I must choose,
such words retaining meter'd mode of mine:
I might unleash that vig'rous whip and lash,
the tongue! which with more use does gain an edge.

But as the ancient wisdom says to be:
In silence fool may seem, but speech gives proof.

And so tumult'ous blogs will raise a stink
    concerning recent liturgies out East.
But sweet relief! I shall not give my thoughts.

    Good Taste
Each week we spend some time at nearby store
    Piccadilly near Library has tastes
Of wine and beer for merely three dollars.
Just yesterday the off'ring was of two fine reds
Both blended wines, but don't turn up your nose
    They were SNAFU of California
and also Saint George from the Bordeaux realm.
Aughts six and three were giv'n respectively.
They were quite good, but more than we would pay.

The beers (all four) were all for summer drink
And one especially has caught my tongue
Call'd ZON: a summer wheat that's light and sweet
With citrus flavors and a touch of herbs.
It's brew'd in Kansas City (Missouri)
    by Boulevard Brewing (since eighty-nine).
They say it's their interpretation of
a classic Belgian white (or "whitier").
With heart and mind I recommend this beer
if Belgian white sounds like your cup of tea.
